Nuts are fruits composed of a hard shell and a seed that is generally edible. Botanists also require that the shell does not open to release the seed.
Many nuts such as almonds, pecans, pistachios, walnuts and brazil nuts are not actually nuts at all in a botanical sense as common usage of the term often refers to any hard-walled, edible kernel as a nut.
However for this post we are focussing on nuts that have a culinary status as a nut
- Brazil nut
- Chilean hazelnut
- Malabar chestnut
- Pine nut
- Yeheb nut
So can chinchillas eat nuts at all?
Unfortunately they can’t.
They are notoriously too fatty and acidic for chinchillas to handle and should be avoided as a food for them.
If they do eat them they could become ill or much worse depending on how much of them is eaten.
So do steer clear of feeding them to them.
