Apples are fruit of the apple tree which is a deciduous tree from the rose family and is known for its pomaceous and sweet fruit. It is grown the world over and is the most grown species of the Malus genus.
Their trees are large if they are grown from seed and their are 7,500 known cultivars of apples which are bred for different uses and tastes including cooking, eating raw and also for the production of cider.
So can chinchillas eat apples at all and if they can how much of them can be eaten?
Lets take a look at their nutritional values to find out more about them.
As you can see apples contain a hint of calcium, but are quite sweet and of course, acidic.
This means that chinchillas can eat apples, but only in small amounts. Once a week in small diced amounts should suffice.
So how much of the apple can be eaten?
Chinchillas can eat the apple peel, it is absolutely fine for them. However, they cannot eat the apple core as it will stick in their throats and the seeds are not so great for them either.
So when preparing the apple, just chop around the core and dispose of the centre before feeding the chinchilla the main part of the apple.
Can chinchillas eat any kind of apple?
I would steer clear of any sour apples that are used for cooking only and feed only apples that are eaten by humans.
