Many owners have both chinchillas and degus as pets. They are popular pets to have and loved by many around the world.
So as they are both rodents, this post looks at whether it is possible to put the two together and save one space and food.
To start with, lets look at how the two animals compare.
What are chinchillas like?
Chinchillas are animals who are very quick, inquisitive and love to move.
Being small in stature, they can get around very easily and evade predators who are out to get them.
They are small and fragile creatures and should not be treated roughly.
Chins have beautiful fur which is has been sought after over the years.
They are low maintenance and don’t require much looking after.
They are social creatures who very much enjoy living with other chinchillas.
Chins enjoy living in areas of high humidity.
Chinchillas are herbivores which means that they only eat berries, fruits, leaves, roots, and grasses
However, they are quite highly strung characters and have very short spans of attention
A chinchilla can live around 10 years if they are treated well and with respect.
Chinchillas are nocturnal creatures who enjoy sleeping during the day and being active at night.
What are degus like?
Degus are very similar to chinchillas.
They are very fast like chinchillas and love to jump and run around.
Degus are also very fragile creature, but more rat like in their shape and size than chinchillas.
They are not as furry as chinchillas and their coat is much thinner.
Like chinchillas, they are low maintenance and don’t require a great deal of looking after.
They are also social creatures who need to live with other degus.
Degus also love warm weather and do not like the cold.
They are also quite highly strung characters and have short spans of attention.
However, unlike chinchillas, degus are omnivores. This means that they can eat a variety of food of both plant and animal origin.
Unlike chinchillas they live for slightly shorter life spans of between 6-8 years.
Can chinchillas and degus live together?
So as you can see, they are very similar types of pets.
They are both rodents and have very similar attributes.
If they are so similar, then what is stopping them from living with each other?
They can eat very similar foods, degus can even eat chinchilla foods.
They are very similar in character and are both quite passive creatures.
So why can’t they live together?
The reason that it’s not a good idea to keep them together is because of their sleeping patterns.
The fact that chinchillas are nocturnal and degus are diurnal creatures can cause problems for both creatures as they can disturb each other when they sleep.
This could cause issues in their relationship.
How can degus and chinchillas interact?
If you want your degu and chinchilla to interact together, the best way to do this is to have supervised periods of time where they spend in the same vicinity.
Monitor this time and don’t take your eyes off them to ensure that there is no issues or problems between them.
Any sign of violence, then pull one of them out immediately.
But they can learn to get along together with your supervision. This would have to be during a time when they are both naturally awake and not be forced awake.
They can learn to play together well and respect each other, just like the two below
Its just not a good idea for them to share the same cage.
